Private Teaching with Scott Heron

  • Each student is an individual with personal needs and objectives. I will devise a tailor made plan for each student, whether you want to aim for an exam, improve your general facility or just have fun.

  • At the end of the day, good cello playing boils down to simple techniques which anyone can learn. I have professional knowledge of technique, acquired from a music college level education, and nearly 40 years of empirical learning.

  • Watching cellists perform is an invaluable tool in learning. Therefore, I am happy to record myself playing repertoire, exercises, orchestral extracts, scales etc which I will post on my website/Youtube, or send directly to my student via WhatsApp. My students tell me this is very useful, and also helps the parents of younger students to gain a better understanding of what needs to be achieved.

  • At the end of the 3rd term, I will host a ‘Cello Soirée’. This will give those students who desire it, an opportunity perform what they are working on in a supportive and friendly environment. We will also form various ensembles from amongst the pool of players. We are joined by some of my cello colleagues give provide added support. Another benefit of this is the social aspect, giving students a chance to meet and play along with other cellists that I teach and guest cellists. You can see videos of our performances by looking at my Youtube channel and searching for ‘Scott Heron’.

  • I provide exam tuition up to diploma standard. I am very proud to say that some of my students have attended Music College or studied Music at University, and have gone on to become freelance musicians/orchestral players.

  • In the course of my day job with the Music Service, I teach violin, viola, cello, double bass and beginner guitar. My website will be a place where all my students can access video tutorials, access written exercises, sheet music etc, and download them for free. You are of course very welcome to visit it and take advantage of it. I also use it as a forum which is linked to my ‘String Maestro’ Facebook page. I post quite frequently, and I would encourage you to engage with it.

  • I am experienced at preparing students for music festivals and several of my students have participated in and won prizes at various Northern Irish festivals. If a student wishes to enter a festival I will provide support each step of the way to ensure that the experience is an enjoyable and challenging one, no matter what the outcome.
